History of Samuel Brannan

A golden nugget of history in Sacramento, CA

Samuel Brannan (March 2, 1819 – May 5, 1889) was an American settler, businessman, journalist who founded the California Star, the first newspaper in San FranciscoCalifornia. He is considered the first to publicize the California Gold Rush and was its first millionaire. In 1847, Brannan opened a store at Sutter's Fort, in present-day Sacramento, California. During that time he also built many large buildings in both Sacramento and San Francisco. He used the profits from his stores to buy large tracts of real estate.  Brannan's wife divorced him and he was forced to liquidate much of his real estate to pay her one-half of their assets. He died poor and in relative obscurity. Brannan Manor

housed Sam Brannon for some time in Old Sacramento.

TESTIMONIALS

JESSICA  M.

But I will say more, we searched all around Old Sacramento after arriving at 11ish looking for brunch. I called a couple places and while walking around we poked our heads in and asked and were so relieved that they served breakfast. It's also a really comfortable place we took the booth in the back next to the fireplace. We will definitely be coming back in the future and bringing friends. Thanks!

Now that they have changed to the name to Brannan Manor Restaurant & Spirits, they have created an even more amazing restaurant and bar. It is real classy and their prices did not go up. Their menu has expanded to include some fine dining options that are very reasonably priced. We love coming here before events at the Golden One, they always have space for our groups, and the post-event parties are fun as well.
